Today is a great day to do business in Moorhead is not a hollow saying for Mike Lemke owner/operator of Lemke Home Improvement in South Moorhead. He speaks well of the many opportunities that have been presented to him and his family. The company, of course, has researched the possibility of moving to North Dakota for business reasons, but as Mike stated, “When you add up all of the facts –economic and social considerations-, Moorhead is the place to be.”
As a Barnesville, MN native, Mike grew up in a family with a strong work ethic. His dad, Butch, owned and operated Butch Marine instilled in Mike the business sense that has made Lemke Home Improvements (LHI inc.) the success that it has achieved over the years.
For relaxation, Mike enjoys motocrossing among other outside sports, which allows him some time to himself, with “no interruptions, nobody wants anything” he said and “to go as fast as I can.” However, Mike is also quick to credit his wife Kylah who is a key influence not only in his personal life, but in the business world as well. They enjoy their responsibilities in raising their two sons ages 8 and 13 and ensure that they are spending quality time with them.
Following the familiar story of many entrepreneurs, Mike’s business venture started out with attending several local colleges and working on area farms, ABC Seamless, and a summer at Western Products. In 1995, he launched Lemke Home Improvements in the back of his pickup with a storage shed in North Fargo and hasn’t looked back since. Mike expressed gratitude to Neil Qualey a local Moorhead banker who took a chance on a young man’s idea of going into business on his own who was willing to assume the risks and rewards associated with that venture.
That chance on Mike has led to the future expansion and construction of a new office-warehouse located at 1805 23rd Street South in Moorhead, of course. Based on an estimated $603,000 new building value, the company will receive a four-year property tax exemption. The company expects to move from its current location 2262 26th Street South sometime this spring. The plan is keep the current facility and perhaps rent it.

He also guaranteed an honest approach with each customer from the initial meeting to job completion. Lemke Home Improvements, he assured, has the knowledge and experience of 18 full-time trained employees to serve both the residential and commercial market, but small enough to deliver the personalized service expected.
