Kids and Guns

I watched another one of those TV special, propaganda gun shows the other night… It was insulting to the intelligence of a normal human being. Anyone who knows anything about self-defense, firearms and kids could have made a better documentary.

Yes, children die of gun injuries and is a shame and tragic. On average, out of 71 kids being killed by firearms…40 killings were unintentional and 31 were alleged homicides. Now remember, these homicides are kids killing kids… gangs in larger cities.

This documentary was mostly about accidental deaths of children by firearms and made it sound like an epidemic… which is not the case. In 11,560 unintentional injuries in the U.S. 0.2 were children killed accidentally by firearms. Motor vehicle accidents deaths of children was 8.1, drowning was 1.3, poisoning 1.2, and even suffocation was considerably more at 1.5.

They showed several kids from some Eastern states finding unloaded, planted handguns around the room and seeing what kids would do with them. Hello? How many kids in most of those Eastern states have ever even seen a real gun?

Anyway, about half the boys touched the firearm and only 9 out of 24 girls touched them. (Not surprising.) It was a wakeup call to many of the parents who had told their kids to never touch a gun if they find one.

Hiding guns doesn’t work… them little rug rats can find them where ever ya hide them. The safest way is a gun safe. Those small digital handgun safes are fast to open, and kids can’t open them. Some argue that you can’t get to the gun fast enough if you need it… not true, I have one and it takes me about 3 to 4 seconds to open it from a dead sleep. (And it’s loaded and ready.)

Based on FBI statistics of there being 80 million gun owners in the U.S. the percentage of accidental deaths per gun owner is 0.0000188.

Many kids who are involved in accidental shootings are ignorant about how dangerous guns can be, while the educated ones are less apt to play with one when they find it. Of course some kids will not listen about anything… be it guns, drugs, driving safely or anything else.

It is reported that nearly one and a half million Americans a year use a gun to AVOID a dangerous situation and 97% of those emerge uninjured. It’s a dangerous society we live in and if no one had guns but the bad guys… we wouldn’t have a society.

I recall the President saying NOT to judge certain religions by the actions of a few lunatics, BUT, we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few?
