As the Supreme Court mulls over a decision on same sex marriage, I can’t help but wonder how it got that far. Homosexuality from the beginning of time has traditionally been considered immoral as well as a form of perversion and an unnatural act. Agree or disagree, it certainly can’t be considered “natural” or normal.
Not many years ago, it was even illegal in most of the U.S. and most of the world. Yes, I have heard the argument that homosexuals are born that way and can’t help it. Well, there are people born with the desire to do other things that are considered wrong, but that doesn’t make it right. There are those who have the desire to have sexual relations with young children; I don’t know if that’s born in them or not, but we sure can’t justify that because they have that desire, can we?
I am not homophobic, nor do I hate homosexuals. I just know that homosexuality isn’t normal. And we should consider the long-term effects it has on children being raised by gay people. Just because TV, media, the younger generation and some politicians support it doesn’t make it moral or acceptable. And because it has become more popular doesn’t make it right either.
Of course, God loves all people, but consider this: “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable” (Leviticus 18:22) and “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.” “The institution of marriage as a union of man and woman, uniquely involving the procreation and rearing of children within a family, is as old as the book of Genesis. Seems pretty clear, doesn’t it?
The Catholic Church, Presbyterian Church, Islam, United Methodist Church, Southern Baptist Convention, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, National Association of Evangelicals, Lutheran and American Baptist Churches USA all oppose same-sex marriage. That’s pretty much mainstream; however our country’s mainstream is pretty much changing.
Could there be another reason for today’s big national push for gay marriage? It would entitle gay couples to typical marriage benefits, including claiming a tax exemption for a spouse, receiving social security payments from a deceased spouse, and coverage by a spouse’s health insurance policy. On Dec. 17, 2009, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that the cost to the federal government of extending employment benefits to same-sex domestic partners of certain federal employees (making no mention of additional costs such as Social Security and inheritance taxes) would be $596 million in mandatory spending and $302 million in discretionary spending between 2010 and 2013.
The press can talk all they want about surveys on same-sex marriage and so can the politicians, but I believe that most of the people in this country don’t want it. (Who knows, maybe the majority ruled in Sodom and Gomorrah.) But for now… it’s the squeaky wheel that’s getting the grease.
