Fargo Fire Department Responds to a Fire at Lavelle Company

FARGO, N.D. (Feb 1, 2012) – At 12:04 a.m., the Fargo Fire Department responded to a fire at the Lavelle Company located at 3101 4th Ave. S. The Fire Department was initially dispatched for a commercial fire alarm and sprinkler flow switch activation. When crews arrived on scene there was no visible smoke or fire coming from the commercial building. Upon entering the building, fire crews discovered that the sprinkler system had extinguished a fire located in a room that was used for staining and spray finishing of wood products. The fire involved a four foot portable work bench that had tools and staining supplies stored on it.

The fire caused no structural damage to the building and there was only minor smoke and water damage to the room where the fire was located. There was nobody present in the building at the time of the fire.

Fargo Fire Department responded with 17 personnel on 4 engines, 1 truck, and 1 command vehicle. A possible cause being investigated includes spontaneous combustion of oily rags that were discarded in a metal container next to the portable work station. Damage is estimated at $1000.00.

The Fargo Fire Department encourages all businesses that contain sprinkler systems to make sure they are professionally inspected and functioning properly.

ST. PAUL — Minnesota’s county prosecutors are teaming up with state lawmakers on legislation that would expand the power of prosecutors to charge violent felons for possessing firearms.

Two DFL lawmakers unveiled the proposal Thursday at the Capitol saying the bill’s handful of changes are aimed at cutting gun violence by giving prosecutors tools to crack down on gun possession by people convicted of violent crimes, or ruled by a judge to be dangerous.

The bill includes a provision to prohibit gun possession by people convicted of felony domestic violence, and would prohibit felons who can’t own guns from buying ammunition.

Public safety committees in both the House and Senate plan comprehensive upcoming hearings about numerous proposed changes to gun laws.

The North Dakota Department of Health Educates About Booster Seats During Child Passenger Safety Month

Bismarck, N.D. – During Child Passenger Safety Month in February, North Dakota elementary school children and their parents will be receiving life-saving information about child passenger safety best practices through their local law enforcement and public health agencies. The students will also be receiving information about the “Ready? Safe? Go!” campaign. This campaign teaches children to ask themselves if they are traveling in the safest way possible – buckled up correctly in the back seat.

“One thing that we want to emphasize is the length of time a child needs to ride in a booster seat,” said Dawn Mayer with the North Dakota Department of Health’s Child Passenger Safety Program. “We see a lot of children prematurely using seat belts. We often get questions from parents about the use of booster seats and when to transition between car seats, booster seats, and seat belts.” Because of that, we’ve put together 10 top tips for boosters that will answer everyone’s questions about the transition from boosters to seat belts. For the ten top tips got to: www.nddohpressroom.gov.
