This week has had me kind of puzzled.

I have been called more names and told to go do more things with myself, than I can ever recollect. My views on how people are reacting with emotion on gun control has sparked a few people to get upset with me, however, I do not tolerate being cursed at and called names. This does come with the territory, but part of the reason we are America is because we don’t kill each other over differing views. The rest of the world cannot understand how we end up with our elections being so crazy and heatedly debated that we do not kill each other. That is the cool part of being American, and living in America, we can do these things without going crazy. So, remember what Socrates said, “When the debate is lost, slander is the tool of the loser.” So I find it fitting that maybe we remember a little something about where this week finds us.

This week finds us approaching the Martin Luther King holiday, and some interesting things for our community. According to Wikipedia, Martin Luther King Jr. was an American clergyman, activist, and prominent leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience, and his famous, “I have a Dream” speech. I grew up idolizing Dr. King and many of the things he stood for. Here was a man, just standing up and saying, hey I want to be treated like everyone else. He did not want special treatment; all he wanted was fair treatment. Just listen to this passage from his speech in Washington D.C.: “I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.’

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today.

The “I Have a Dream” speech has come to be regarded as one of the finest orations in the history of American oratory.
