A Dedicated Group of Veterans

Veteran’s Corner

Jason Hicks | Commander United Patriotic bodies Fargo Memorial Honor Guard

As we finish up celebrating Memorial Day, I take the time to reflect of another successful year for the Fargo Memorial Honor Guard. You see for us; EVERY day is memorial as we lay to rest hundreds of Veterans at the Fargo national cemetery. I am truly blessed to be commander of such a wonderful group of men and women. Dedication and selfless service are our watch words. To display such effort is really a sight to see, in the coldest of winter or hottest of summer we are there.
As many know we have been fighting and campaigning to put a permanent structure out there. As many doors were closed by bureaucrats, we kicked others open. We simply won’t take no for an answer, it’s unacceptable. This is our Arlington National Cemetery, and we want it to be the most welcome and safe environment possible. Over the passage of time myself and others have for certain upset some in the political realm, you see we serve our fellow veterans not ourselves and endless backroom meetings have been conducted without any input from the actual boots on the ground Veterans. And I’m not speaking of some figure head appointee, but, us, the ones that do the actual work. I’ve heard plenty of people say; well what do they expect it’s a cemetery. Yep, 100% it is that, but so much more. And while it’s easy to sit back and say things it takes actual effort to go out, put on a uniform and stand in all types of weather and perform this sacred duty. So I often tire of hearing people tell us what we need, having zero comprehension of what it means to volunteer your time, money and efforts to such an incredible cause.
Having said that we are always seeking like-minded people who are willing to give back to our great country. I’m constantly seeing hats, license plates, window stickers etc… proudly claiming service in this branch or this war. I really encourage you, if you are a Veteran or know one, have them come and see what we do at the National Cemetery and beyond. Show off that proud service, we supply all the uniforms and training. If you just want Tuesdays, great, if only weekends work, we have many, many parades lined up. The options are endless. And I can say once you get involved you will feel right at home with our dedicated group of Veterans.
