MOORHEAD AREA PUBLIC SCHOOLS AWARDED $100,000 GRANT TO LAUNCH YOUTH SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAM
MOORHEAD – Moorhead Area Public Schools (MAPS) is pleased to announce that the district has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Labor & Industry’s Youth Skills Training (YST) program. This grant will enable MAPS to establish a comprehensive program aimed at providing students over the age of 16 with valuable work experience in five specific industries: advanced manufacturing, agriculture, automotive, healthcare and information technology.
By offering opportunities for hands-on training and skill development, the program equips students with the tools they need to succeed in today’s competitive job market.
“We are thrilled to receive this generous grant from the Minnesota Department of Labor & Industry,” said Dr. Brandon Lunak, MAPS Superintendent. “The Youth Skills Training program aligns perfectly with our Moorhead High School Career Academy which emphasizes our commitment to providing students with pathways to success beyond the classroom.”
MHS Principal Josh Haag added, “With this funding, we will be able to strengthen our commitment to unparalleled experiential student learning about careers based on industry and professional standards. We help students discover their passions, explore their options, work toward industry certifications and gain real work skills.”
The $100,000 grant will be utilized by MAPS to implement YST principles at Moorhead High School Career Academy, including staffing, marketing, supplies for departments and establishing partnerships with industry professionals. Through strategic collaborations with local businesses and organizations, MAPS reaffirms its pledge to strengthen community and business partnerships to meet regional workforce needs.
Moorhead High School’s YST program will not only benefit participating students but also contribute to the economic development of the Moorhead community by preparing a skilled workforce ready to meet the demands of today’s industries.
MAPS is one of 17 districts selected by the state to receive a YST grant. These grants are part of the Department of Labor and Industry’s YST program that was signed into law in 2017 with bipartisan support to create and provide employment training for student learners ages 16 and older in high-growth, high-demand occupations.
TRAFFIC ALERT: ROAD CLOSURE AT OAKPORT ST N AT 50 AVE N
Starting Wednesday, May 8, Oakport St N at 50 Ave N will be closing for a flood mitigation project. Oakport St N will be detoured on Hwy 75 via 43 Ave N and Wall St Ave N (County Rd 22). This project is anticipated to be completed in late October. Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes and use caution while in this area.
MOORHEAD PUBLIC SERVICE INVITES THE COMMUNITY OF MOORHEAD TO CELEBRATE DRINKING WATER WEEK
MOORHEAD – Moorhead Public Service (MPS) joins communities across North America in celebrating Drinking Water Week, an annual observance led by American Water Works Association (AWWA). Taking place May 5-11 this year, Drinking Water Week serves to highlight the importance of safe drinking water and recognize the tireless efforts of water professionals who keep it flowing around the clock in our communities.
This year’s celebration also coincides with a historic milestone – the 50th anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) in the United States, a landmark law designed to safeguard the public by setting high drinking water quality standards. The SDWA provides a scientific framework to identify potential risks to drinking water and address them in partnership with states and water utilities.
“Drinking Water Week is the perfect time to reflect on all that safe drinking water means in our lives,” said AWWA CEO David LaFrance. “Safe, reliable drinking water is critical in many ways, including public health, economic prosperity and our high quality of life. With the Safe Drinking Water Act anniversary, we also celebrate the committed water system workers, the vigilant regulators, the researchers, the public health professionals, the environmental advocates, and everyone with a hand in fulfilling the high standards and spirit of the SDWA.”
