This next week is very special and unique to this area. Giving Hearts Day is right around the corner on February 8th. It’s the area’s largest day of giving. For many charities this is their biggest fundraiser of the year. There are several that benefit veterans, or have programs that do. Here are some I personally recommend.
The Brady Oberg Legacy Foundation- They’ve sharpened the spear by raising awareness and fighting the stigma of PTSD. Taking many approaches to do this. They hold several retreats where veterans can bond, heal and talk. Setting up scholarships to veterans pursuing careers in the mental health field. I can tell you from personal experiences talking to a fellow veteran about issues from military service rapidly advances the healing. Physical fitness programs are another. Personal fitness has been proven to boost mental and physical health. I applaud them for taking several approaches to healing and helping veterans.
Fix it forward Ministry, Inc.- Although not a veteran specific organization this charity has given away an astounding 457 cars. 20% of these vehicles have gone to veterans. The organization also does repairs. They receive referrals from multiple agencies, which ensure funds are going to those who need it. So many lives have been improved due to their work.
Rebuilding Together- Another group that dedicates resources and services to many veterans. They provide vital and much needed home repairs. Some of the repairs keep the home habitable. Repairs are quite expensive; roof replacement, foundation repair, electrical updates, tub to shower conversions and new windows. They focus on seniors, disabled and veterans. They have volunteers, contractors and folks working on grants. They’ve been recognized and awarded for their efforts.
These charities provide services and help veterans stay independent. Often dropping safety nets to the veteran community the VA does not. Pillars to build a better future or maintain a good quality life is their hallmarks.
Fargo Memorial Honor Guard- the FMHG provides ceremonies for our veterans and leave a lasting memory for the family. One of the goals is to construct a private use shelter at the Fargo National Cemetery. This would give the families a place to celebrate their loved ones. It would also provide off-street parking.
Other groups worth mention. Jail Chaplains, American Heroes Outdoors, Heroes Compass, Gladys Ray Shelter.
