JUVENILE VICTIM OF FRIDAY SHOOTING IDENTIFIED

MOORHEAD – Zain Hussein Mezher, age 13, of Moorhead, MN, died Friday, June 23, of an accidental gunshot wound.

On Friday, June 23, 2023, officers were alerted to an accidental shooting in the 900 block of 19 Street South. The victim was in a wooded area in the 1000 block of 19 Street South. Emergency personnel immediately began life-saving measures; however, Mezher succumbed to his injuries.

An autopsy at the Ramsey County Medical concluded that the preliminary cause of death was a single gunshot wound.

A group of juveniles had acquired the handgun and were handling it in a wooded area. During that time, the handgun discharged, striking the victim. The handgun was recovered and secured by the Moorhead Police Department.

There is no danger to the public, and the incident is still under investigation. The Clay County Attorney’s Office and the MN Bureau of Apprehension are still actively assisting in the investigation. Any charges regarding this incident will be the decision of the Clay County Attorney’s Office when the case has concluded.

MOORHEAD AREA PUBLIC SCHOOLS BUILDINGS CLOSED TO PUBLIC JULY 3 – 14 

MOORHEAD – All Moorhead Area Public Schools buildings will be closed to the public from July 3-14. The closure is due to impacts of the MHS Construction project that will affect phone and internet service in all buildings. District employees may be working remotely and will be reachable by email.

MOORHEAD HIGH CLASS OF 1973 50TH REUNION

OAK GROVE, SOUTH RIVERSIDE ADDITION REHABILITATION PROJECT 

Phase 2 construction on the Oak Grove, Riverside Addition rehabilitation project began June 21.  This phase of work is anticipated to last for 4-5 weeks, weather permitting.

Residents in Phase 2 will lose direct access to their driveways during this phase. Property owners should use adjacent street parking locations outside of the designated construction area. During this time, we ask that homeowners outside of Phase 2 minimize street parking during construction hours, which will be from 7 am-7 pm.

Garbage collection will continue during this phase of construction. 

In addition to the City project, Xcel Energy will continue to perform gas main replacement project on 1 St S between 7 Ave S and 12 Ave S. This private utility work is independent of the City’s project. Resident questions on this project should be directed to Tom Berseth at Xcel at 701.640.1406.
