USDA EXPANDS LOCAL FOODS IN MINNESOTA SCHOOLS
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) announced Tuesday it has signed a $3,458,752.00 cooperative agreement with Minnesota to increase their purchase of nutritious, local foods for school meal programs.
Through the Local Food for Schools Cooperative Agreement Program (LFS), the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) will purchase and distribute local and regional foods and beverages for schools to serve children through the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. These products will be healthy and unique to their geographic area, with the goal of improving child nutrition and building new relationships between schools and local farmers.
“This cooperative agreement supporting Minnesota’s schools is another example of how USDA is working to build a more resilient food system rooted in local and regional production,” said USDA Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs Jenny Lester Moffitt. “The Local Food for Schools Cooperative Agreement Program provides an opportunity for states to strengthen ties between local farmers, ranchers, food businesses and schools, and gives students access to nutritious foods unique to the area they live in, building stronger connections across local communities.”
CONCORDIA ART EXHIBITION OPENS ACADEMIC YEAR
MOORHEAD – Concordia College’s art exhibition “Again and again and again” opens Thursday, Sept. 1, and runs through Sept. 29, in the Cyrus M. Running Gallery. A public reception will take place from 4-5:30 p.m. with artist remarks at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, in the gallery.
The installation, inspired by a workshop led by the artist Rotem Tamir, transforms the gallery space into a workshop-like setting, in which handwoven woolen floor pillows lay scattered on woodworking tables. It feels as if their makers had just recently left the scene, barely finishing their last hand on these objects. The pillows are inspired by the research Tamir did on her own Libyan-Jewish heritage.
Tamir immigrated to the United States from Israel in 2011. Currently she serves as the assistant professor in sculpture at the department of art at the University of Minnesota. Her work has been exhibited at venues including Law Warschaw Gallery, St. Paul, Minn.; Locust Projects, Miami, Fla.; the Harn Museum, Gainesville, Fla.; and galleries in Tel Aviv, among others. Tamir has been awarded residencies including Sculpture Space, Utica, N.Y.; and Art OMI International Arts Center in New York. She received the Toby Devan Lewis Fellowship award; the Artis Exhibition Grant from artiscontemoprary.org, New York, N.Y., and recently the 2021 McKnight Fellowship for Visual Artists.
Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday.
The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
EPILEPSY FOUNDATION OF MINNESOTA HOSTS ANNUAL MOORHEAD WALK
MOORHEAD – Today, the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota (EFMN) will host its annual epilepsy walk at M.B. Johnson Park from 5:00 – 7:30 pm. EFMN has hosted this event in Moorhead for 15 years, which includes family-friendly activities, a short but impactful program, community building, food, and, of course, a walk! These events have helped the Moorhead community build awareness and support for epilepsy and seizure response.
“We are thrilled to be able to host these walks for our communities across Minnesota,” said Glen Lloyd, CEO of EFMN. “Together, we are united in the epilepsy journey to bring statewide awareness and resources to every impacted family and individual. We are so excited to see the support and the enthusiasm for our regional walks. The passage of Seizure Smart Schools legislation helps ensure every student in Minnesota is supported and protected. Our communities are at the heart of everything we do, and we are so grateful to be able to bring these walks to cities across Minnesota.”
Starting this school year, students and their families for the first time will have the reassurance that students living with epilepsy will receive the care they deserve if and when a seizure happens at school. Because of the passage of Seizure Smart Schools legislation in 2021, thousands of families in public and charter schools across the state will have much-needed peace of mind about their children’s wellbeing.
A major focus of the Moorhead epilepsy walk will be extending essential public health information to the entire Moorhead community on how to be Seizure Smart.

Property reviews help the City Assessor determine current and accurate property values as required by the State of Minnesota. An interior inspection ensures the most accurate valuation.

MOORHEAD – Moorhead Pageants are seeking candidates for Miss Moorhead ages 19-25, Moorhead’s Outstanding Teen ages 12-18, and Moorhead Princess participants. Ages 4-11.
