We froze for a reason

This is one tired writer. This weekend we had our “freezing for a reason” at the Moorhead Legion, it was one of the Frostival activities.

The premise is staying outside in a tent for 44 hours over 2 days. The 22 hours each day represents the number of Veterans that commit suicide daily.

This years theme was raising awareness and funds for some great causes. Chiefly building a shelter at the National Cemetery. The other focus was on giving hearts days charities and we are  looking forward to that. Once again the people that supported us were overwhelming. Sheriffs Empting and Jahner rejoined us. Both these men give very generously of what free time they have and we are lucky to have them.

Jay Thomas from 970am and Paul and Janae from the AM coffee club joined us. Folks from the Garden of Healing stayed Friday too. Paul did not camp but he did his last show with the Front Fenders. They slayed the Legion on Friday night. Scott Hennen and Steve Hallstrom stopped out for a while and offered us support.

Dave Jacobs from 107.9 stayed with us on Saturday night along with other veterans groups.

This newspaper covered the event prior and allows me to give local veterans a platform. Thanks Tammy and Nancy, I appreciate you two.

All the local media were there, many were there several times throughout the weekend. What great support from them.

On Saturday night a HUGE announcement was made. Icon Architecture Group Inc. graciously committed to do the design of the shelter pro bono. Dr. Kliman, chair of NDSUs Architecture program was there and announced a design competition.

Representatives from both sides of the river were invited to attend the announcement. Senators, Congressional Representative, and County Commissioners were all invited.

Kevin Cramer and Michelle Fischbach sent representatives. Kevin Campbell was the only County Commissioner to show from both sides of the river. Mayor Tim Mahoney attended as well. The Moorhead Mayor called and extended congratulations.

Hundreds of people stopped by during the weekend. One that touched me was a young boy and dad with a 100 bill. When he reached up to donate it, I wondered if someone was cutting onions.

The MN Army National Guard members came out and helped us a bit. Thanks!

Its amazing how this community comes out and supports veterans. It’s a great place to live.
