Wayne Ingersoll, a former mayor of Moorhead and Clay County commissioner, was honored Monday with the city’s fourth Moorheart award. The award, initiated earlier this year, recognizes “individuals who go above and beyond to demonstrate community within our City by their actions and service,” according to its guidelines.

Mayor Pro Tem Chuck Hendrickson, who presented the award at the biweekly city council meeting, said, “Wayne has spent the majority of his life serving Moorhead and Clay County.” A lifetime resident of Moorhead, he taught English in the junior high school for 37 years, retiring in 2004. He was mayor of Moorhead from 1978 to 1979 and a Clay County commissioner from 2009 to 2016. He has also served on the city planning commission, the library board and the board of A Place for Hope, among other appointments.

Community development director Kristie Leshovsky, who introduced the presentation, said, “Frankly, when the idea for this award first came up, Wayne Ingersoll was the first name I thought of.”

Previous winners of the award include former mayor Johnathan Judd; the administrators of the Moorhead=Fantastic Facebook page (Chris Orth, Marsha Drewlow Wichman and Mara Morken); and human rights advocate Cani Adon. Winners receive a plaque created by Karman Rheault.
