ONE VEGETABLE, ONE COMMUNITY EVENT FOR YOUTH JUNE 16
MOORHEAD – The Moorhead Public Library will welcome representatives from One Vegetable, One Community on June 16 from 2-3 p.m. The group will share about gardening and growing zucchinis, as well as a gardening-themed Storytime. The One Vegetable, One Community event will be offered free-of-charge for youth of all ages at the Moorhead Public Library, 118 5th St. S.
One Vegetable, One Community unites our communities by encouraging gardeners of all levels to plant, grow, cook, and/or share a featured vegetable of the year. The program starts conversations about food and how communities support healthy lives. More information about the program can be found by visiting the One Vegetable, One Community Facebook page.
This event is offered as part of the 2021 Tales & Trails Summer Library Experience, inviting youth to read to win great prizes, as well as attend outdoor events in celebration of the tales and trails of the region. MINNESOTA STATE CAPITOL BUILDING REOPENS JUNE 10
The Minnesota State Capitol Building will reopen to the public on Thursday, June 10 with regular weekday hours of 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Weekend hours will resume at a later date.
The building will remain open beyond regular hours as needed to accommodate House of Representatives and Senate floor sessions as well as any legislative hearings conducted in Capitol hearing rooms.
With the reopening, the public will once again be able to reserve space in the Capitol for meetings and events. Events will continue to be permitted on the Upper Mall, Lower Mall, and Leif Erikson Park. The Minnesota Historical Society Information Desk on the Capitol’s First Floor will be open and providing information for self-guided tours. Guided tours are expected to resume later this summer. MOORHEAD AREA PUBLIC SCHOOLS SUMMER FOOD PROGRAM
MOORHEAD – Moorhead Area Public Schools and the YMCA are partnering to provide summer meal access for all children ages 1-18. Beginning June 7 through August 13, eligible children may receive one meal pickup per day. Parents, guardians or students must be present to receive meals and may only pick up the meals at one site as scheduled below. Special diet meals are available by contacting the Food Services Department.

NURSING STUDENTS RECOGNIZED WITH MSU MOORHEAD DAISY AWARDS®
MOORHEAD – Two nursing students at Minnesota State University Moorhead were recently honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s mission to express gratitude to nursing students from programs that recognize them for the extraordinary, compassionate and skillful care they provide to patients and their families.
The DAISY Foundation expanded its flagship brand, the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, to academic institutions to recognize nursing students who inspire compassionate care. “Recognizing and celebrating nursing students for the above-and-beyond care and compassion they show to patients and their families will be a strong reminder that nursing is not all about tasks and technology,” said Bonnie Barnes, CEO and Co-Founder of the DAISY Foundation.
The first two MSUM DAISY Award winners were selected and recognized this spring. The DAISY Student Nurse of the Year winner from MSUM’s RN to BSN program is Sheila Ripplinger. Ripplinger is the director of nursing at Maryhill Manor in Enderlin, N.D., and was nominated by Matthew Ahrndt.
Heather Betts is the Minnesota Alliance for Nursing Education (MANE) pre-licensure BSN program DAISY Student Nurse of the Year winner. Betts is a junior who was nominated by Abby Griffin, a nurse at Essentia Health who worked with Bets during one of her clinicals. Betts is a graduate of Millard West High School in Omaha, Neb. She lives in Fargo.
A committee at MSU Moorhead chose award recipients from both programs. Each honoree received a certificate, a DAISY Award pin and a sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.
