“Whereas, for 50 years, Moorhead youth high school hockey players and coaches have brought great honor and pride to the citizens of Moorhead the region, are recognized throughout the State of Minnesota for their skill, determination and sportsmanship;” is how my proclamation starts.
Yes, we in Moorhead are proud of our Girls’ and Boy’s Hockey. We have lots of reasons for that. We’ve had 14 State hockey appearances, including one National hockey win. Moorhead has produced some great NHL hockey players like Jason Blake, Ryan Kraft, Matt Cullen, Mark Cullen, Brian Lee, and Chris VandeVelde. But more importantly, it is something Moorhead rallies around and enjoys as a community.
This Saturday, January 24th, the Moorhead Hockey Association will celebrate with a day full of hockey games and cheering. The feature game will be between the Moorhead Spuds boys’ team against rival Roseau Rams at 6pm at the Moorhead Sports Center. Interestingly, the boys’ high school team will be wearing throwback jerseys of the 1966-1967 Spuds Hockey team. The jerseys will be sold as part of the Silent Auction during the social. I would like to extend a special congratulation to our Moorhead Spuds boys and girls teams, past and present, their coaches, parents, and all of our local hockey fans.
