Street closings and detours

40th Avenue South to close between 33rd Street and Drain 27

Fargo, N.D. (Aug. 14, 2014) –Starting Monday, Aug. 18, 40th Avenue South will be closed from 33rd Street to the bridge at Drain 27 (approximately 28th Street). The closure will be in place until the middle of November and is a part of levee and floodwall construction along Drain 27. Vehicles will be detoured to 35th Avenue South via 36th and 28th Streets.

4th Street South to close between 12th and 14th Avenues South

Starting Monday, Aug. 18, 4th Street South will be closed between 12th and 14th Avenues South for approximately 9 weeks. During this time crews will construct a new lift station and flood wall, and replace the pavement on 4th Street. Vehicles will be detoured to 10th Street and University Drive.

Fargo advances to

quarterfinals in energy competition

FARGO, N.D. – The City of Fargo has been selected to advance to the quarterfinalist round of the Georgetown University Energy Prize, a $5-million incentive competition to reduce America’s energy consumption. Fargo was selected for its innovative approach to saving energy. “As a growing City, we see this as a tremendous and timely opportunity to capitalize on our energy, mobilize innovative people and utilize community expertise and resources,” said Fargo City Commissioner Mike Williams. “Working collaboratively with key community partners like Bush Fellow and Architect Malini Srivastava, Cass County Electric, Xcel Energy, NDSU, Riverkeepers, Kilbourne Group and many more, the Georgetown University Energy Prize will

trigger a spirit of cooperation as we continue to implement Fargo’s GO2030 Comprehensive Plan.”

The next rounds of selections for the award will take place over the next two years.

Board Updated on Projects

At their regular meeting held on August 11, 2014, the Board of Managers, Buffalo-Red River Watershed District (BRRWD), discussed several ongoing projects. The concrete work for a house and garage move needed in Georgetown to place the final levee segment has now been completed. Hopes are that the project’s contractor, Reiner Contracting, Inc., can finish the project in the next several weeks. Gladen Construction, Inc. continues to make good progress on the Manston Slough Restoration project. The drier weather conditions have helped. Concrete work started on the primary and County State Aid Highway No. 26 structures. Steven Johnson Excavation has completed work on the Hough erosion site in Section 25, Humboldt Township, Clay County. He has also completed work on the Glyndon Township road erosion, located in Section 16, along 120th AVE S; and he has completed work on repairs an erosion control project installed by the BRRWD several years ago on the Buffalo River in Section 1, Glyndon Township. Northern Excavating, Inc. has completed their work on the outlet repairs for Clay County Ditch (C.D.) No. 5. All of this work is being done through a grant obtained by the Clay Soil and Water Conservation District from the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources. The funding needs to be spent by 8/31/14.

Big Iron Farm Show hosts

Ladies Brunch and Style Show

WEST FARGO, ND – The 34th annual Big Iron Farm Show, North Dakota’s premier agricultural event takes place Sept. 9-10-11, 2014, on the grounds of the Red River Valley Fair,

The brunch will begin at 10 am Wednesday, Sept. 10. Doors will open at 9 am. Cost is $20.00 per person.

As the featured event on Ladies Day, the brunch will be held at the Holiday Inn, Fargo. The popular brunch, sponsored by Eventide Community Living and Essentia Health Stroke and Neurovascular Center will feature entertainment and a style show and is held in the Great Hall of the Holiday Inn Fargo, 3803 13th Avenue South, which is directly across the avenue from West Acres Shopping Center in Fargo.

More than just a brunch, the event features great food, live entertainment, a style show and fantastic door prizes.

Models from local clothing stores, Chicos, Christopher and Banks and The Dress Barn, will showcase the latest fashions during a style show. Another popular aspect of the event is the door prizes which are given away, ranging from gift certificates from the West Acres Shopping Center and other prizes.

The Ladies Day brunch has been part of the Big Iron Farm Show nearly every year, according to Judi Lundstrom, who co-chairs the event with Mary Morken, Casselton, ND. They work with a committee to organize the event.

“We have always had a pretty good crowd,” Lundstrom says. “A lot of women come with their husbands (to the Big Iron Farm Show) and this is an activity for them, although there are a lot of people that aren’t farm-related that come, too.”

In the past years, 300-350 women have been part of the Women’s Day brunch.
